Overview

Berlin Art Week 2027 will take place from 8–12 September 2027 across Berlin, Germany. The five-day festival marks the beginning of Berlin’s autumn contemporary-art season and brings together museums, galleries, collections, project spaces, art fairs, artists and cultural institutions at venues throughout the city. A preview opening reception is scheduled for 7 September 2027.

Rather than being concentrated in one exhibition hall, Berlin Art Week operates as a city-wide programme. Visitors can explore exhibitions, performances, talks, screenings, workshops, gallery openings and other contemporary-art events in different districts of Berlin.

The organisers describe Berlin Art Week as the largest gathering of Berlin’s contemporary art scene. In 2026, the festival involved 125 partners and more than 300 events, attracting around 200,000 visitors. Those figures relate to the 2026 edition and should not be interpreted as a forecast for 2027.

What Makes This Event Special

The defining feature of Berlin Art Week is its city-wide format. Contemporary art is presented not only inside conventional museums and galleries but also through project spaces, private collections, public locations and temporary installations.

The festival provides an opportunity to experience several different parts of Berlin’s art ecosystem during one visit. Visitors can combine major institutional exhibitions with independent galleries, artist-led spaces, discussions and performances.

Berlin Art Week also brings together both established and emerging artists. Previous editions have featured international names alongside Berlin-based artists, while its programme regularly addresses subjects connected with technology, society, politics, urban development and contemporary culture.

Featured Artists & Programme

The complete Berlin Art Week 2027 programme has not yet been published. The official festival has confirmed the dates but has not released a complete list of participating artists, exhibitions and events for September 2027.

The programme traditionally combines several different forms of contemporary art, including exhibitions, installations, performances, film screenings, talks, workshops and special events.

One major event already listed for the 2027 period is POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair, which will take place at the historic Tempelhof Airport. The fair is scheduled around the same weekend as Berlin Art Week and presents contemporary and modern art through participating galleries from Germany and abroad. The final Berlin Art Week programme should be checked closer to September 2027 for confirmed artists, exhibitions, gallery openings and event times.

Event Experience

Berlin Art Week is designed more as an art-city experience than as a single-site festival. Visitors can spend one day exploring major museums and collections, another moving between independent galleries, and another attending talks, performances or special exhibitions. The programme changes from district to district. Mitte, Kreuzberg, Charlottenburg, Tiergarten, Friedrichshain and other parts of Berlin can all become relevant depending on the year’s participating institutions.

The festival also provides opportunities to encounter art outside conventional gallery environments. Public-space installations, performances and temporary projects are an important part of Berlin Art Week’s identity. Because so many events take place simultaneously, visitors generally benefit from choosing a few priority exhibitions or events in advance rather than attempting to cover the entire programme.

Date & Schedule

Berlin Art Week 2027 will take place from:

8–12 September 2027

A preview opening reception is scheduled for 7 September 2027.

The festival’s five-day programme is expected to develop around exhibitions, openings, performances, talks, screenings, project spaces and art fairs. The detailed 2027 daily schedule has not yet been released.

A typical Berlin Art Week programme follows a broad weekly rhythm, with major institutional openings at the beginning of the festival, art-fair activity later in the week, independent project-space programmes and special events throughout the city, and talks, tours and other public programmes towards the weekend. The exact 2027 schedule should be confirmed when the official programme is published.

Location & Venue

There is no single Berlin Art Week venue. Events take place at museums, galleries, collections, project spaces, cultural institutions and public locations throughout Berlin.

Several established Berlin art institutions can be useful starting points for visitors. Hamburger Bahnhof – Contemporary Art National Gallery focuses on contemporary art, while Berlinische Galerie presents modern and contemporary art, photography and architecture.

Visitors interested in photography can also consider C/O Berlin, while Schinkel Pavillon is another important contemporary-art exhibition space in central Berlin.

The POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair will take place at Flughafen Tempelhof, Hangars 5–6, making the former airport one of the key locations to consider during the 2027 art week.

Event History

The first Berlin Art Week took place in September 2012. It was created following the disappearance of art forum berlin and brought together the abc – art berlin contemporary and Preview Berlin Art Fair under a wider city-wide contemporary-art programme. Since then, Berlin Art Week has developed into an annual platform connecting Berlin’s galleries, museums, collections, project spaces and independent art initiatives with an international audience.

The festival has also continued during periods of disruption. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was adapted into a decentralised open-air format rather than being cancelled altogether. By 2026, Berlin Art Week had reached its 15th anniversary edition, with more than 300 events and 125 participating partners.

Getting to the Event

By Air

Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is the city’s main international airport. From the airport, visitors can continue into central Berlin using regional rail, S-Bahn and other public-transport connections.

Because Berlin Art Week takes place across multiple districts, the most convenient route depends on the day’s individual exhibitions and venues.

By Train

Berlin Hauptbahnhof is the city’s main long-distance railway station and provides connections to major German and European cities.

From the station, visitors can use Berlin’s S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram and bus network to reach different parts of the city.

By Public Transport

Public transport is particularly useful during Berlin Art Week because the programme is distributed across the city. Berlin’s extensive U-Bahn and S-Bahn network makes it possible to combine several venues during a single day.

The exact route should be planned according to the individual exhibitions selected for each day rather than around one central festival venue.

By Bicycle

Berlin is also well suited to exploring the festival by bicycle. Cycling can be particularly useful when visiting several galleries within the same district, although longer journeys between districts are generally easier by public transport.

Where to Stay Nearby

Because Berlin Art Week is spread across the entire city, there is no single hotel district that is required for festival visitors. Staying in or around Mitte, Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, Charlottenburg or Tiergarten can provide convenient access to different parts of the programme.

Visitors focusing on museum-heavy programmes may prefer central Berlin, while those planning to spend more time in independent galleries and project spaces may find accommodation in Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain or surrounding districts convenient.

Berlin also has a large range of hotels, serviced apartments and hostels. The city’s accommodation market is continuing to expand, with several new properties planned or opening around 2027.

For a multi-day art trip, staying close to an S-Bahn or U-Bahn station can be more useful than choosing a hotel solely because it is close to one particular exhibition.

Things to Do Before or After the Event

Berlin offers enough museums, historic sites and cultural attractions to extend an Art Week visit into a longer city break.

Visitors interested in art can explore Museum Island, the Neue Nationalgalerie, the Hamburger Bahnhof and other major collections. New National Gallery is particularly relevant for modern art, while Alte Nationalgalerie provides a different perspective through its collection of 19th-century art.

The city also offers numerous independent galleries and creative districts. Mitte’s gallery streets, the former industrial spaces of Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, and the cultural areas around Potsdamer Straße can all be incorporated into an art-focused itinerary.

Visitors who want a break from exhibitions can explore the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, East Side Gallery, Berlin Wall memorial sites, Tiergarten and the city’s many neighbourhoods.

Restaurants & Dining Nearby

Because Berlin Art Week takes place across the city, visitors can choose restaurants according to the day’s exhibition route rather than returning to one central dining area. For visitors exploring the central art districts, Berlin has a particularly wide selection of German, European, Middle Eastern, Asian and international restaurants, as well as cafés and contemporary food halls.

Those spending time around Museum Island and Mitte can find numerous restaurants within walking distance of major cultural institutions. Visitors around Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain will also find a large concentration of casual restaurants, cafés and international food options. For a more art-focused itinerary, it is useful to select restaurants close to the final gallery or exhibition of the day, particularly on evenings when multiple openings and events are scheduled.

Ticket Information

Berlin Art Week does not operate like a single conventional festival with one universal admission ticket. Individual exhibitions, performances, talks, museums and associated events can have their own admission arrangements. Some programmes may be free, while others require tickets or registration. The exact arrangements depend on the participating institution and event.

The POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair, for example, has its own admission system and takes place at Tempelhof Airport as part of the wider Berlin art-week period. Ticket prices and registration details for the main 2027 Berlin Art Week programme have not yet been published in full. Visitors should check the individual organiser or the official Berlin Art Week programme when planning their trip.

Tips Before You Go

Plan your itinerary around districts rather than trying to visit every event in the city. Berlin Art Week involves a large number of simultaneous exhibitions and programmes, so grouping nearby venues together can save considerable travel time. Check whether individual exhibitions require advance registration. Some talks, tours, collection visits and special events have limited capacity.

Allow extra time for travel between districts. An exhibition that looks geographically close on a map can still require a significant journey by public transport. September can bring warm afternoons but cooler evenings, particularly when attending outdoor installations or late events, so comfortable clothing and a light jacket are useful.

If you want to visit the major art fairs as well as museum and gallery programmes, reserve sufficient time for each rather than trying to combine too many major venues into a single day.

Official Event Information

The official Berlin Art Week website should be used for the latest 2027 programme, participating institutions, exhibitions, event registrations and schedule updates.

The festival’s official 2027 dates are 8–12 September, with a preview opening reception on 7 September. The wider Berlin art scene also includes associated fairs and programmes during the same period, including POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair at Tempelhof Airport.
