What to expect in 2027

Party.San Metal Open Air 2027 will return to the Obermehler airfield near Schlotheim in Thuringia from 5–7 August 2027. The festival will be the 31st edition at the Obermehler site and will continue its focus on extreme metal, with Black Metal, Death Metal, Thrash, Pagan Metal, Doom, Grindcore and related styles represented across the programme. The official festival information confirms that the airfield will be closed to normal air traffic during the event and transformed into the Party.San festival grounds.

The 2027 billing currently includes 14 officially listed acts: Vader, Blood Fire Death, Mgła, Nile, Taake, Grimming, Deserted Fear, Non Est Deus, Oxygen Destroyer, Winterfylleth, Guttural Disgorge, Svarttjern, Seth and Primordial. The festival is still building its 2027 programme, so additional artists and programme details may be announced before August.

Several performances have been announced as special festival appearances rather than ordinary sets. Vader will celebrate 35 years of The Ultimate Incantation with an anniversary performance, Deserted Fear will mark 15 years of My Empire with an exclusive festival show, Svarttjern will perform Misanthropic Path Of Madness in full, and Primordial will present The Gathering Wilderness as a complete album show.

Party.San is designed around the music rather than a large number of additional attractions. The festival offers two performance stages, a camping area directly beside the festival grounds, food and drink facilities, a breakfast tent, beer garden, party tent and nightly after-show parties. This creates a compact festival environment where the main focus remains on the bands and the extreme-metal community.

Party.San Metal Open Air 2027 will take place from 5–7 August 2027, running from Thursday through Saturday.

The official FAQ confirms the Thursday-to-Saturday festival period and identifies the event as the 31st Party.San at Obermehler airfield. The camping area opens one day earlier, on Wednesday, 4 August 2027, allowing visitors to arrive and set up before the main concerts begin.

The party tent is scheduled to open on Wednesday evening for the welcome party, food and drinks. During the main festival, it also becomes the location for the daily after-show party after the infield closes.

The former airfield provides a large, relatively open festival environment suited to heavy music and camping. During Party.San, the site is closed to air traffic and becomes the temporary home of the festival’s stages, camping facilities, parking areas, food outlets, sanitary facilities and other visitor services.

Unlike festivals that use a city-centre venue or historic buildings, Party.San has the advantage of a dedicated open-air site where visitors can stay close to the festival action. The camping area is positioned directly next to the festival grounds and consists largely of flat, drained or paved meadow areas.

The lineup covers several branches of extreme metal. Vader, Nile and Deserted Fear represent different sides of Death Metal, while Mgła, Taake, Winterfylleth, Seth, Svarttjern and Non Est Deus bring multiple Black Metal approaches. Primordial and Blood Fire Death add a strong Pagan Metal and Bathory-inspired dimension, while Grimming and Guttural Disgorge provide newer voices in Death and brutal Death Metal.

Headliners & featured artists

Vader: The Polish Death Metal institution will celebrate 35 years of The Ultimate Incantation with a special Party.San performance. The album, originally released in 1992, helped establish the band’s international reputation, and the 2027 show will revisit material from that early period.

Nile: Nile will bring their technical Death Metal to Schlotheim. The band’s music is known for highly complex arrangements, fast guitar work and themes inspired by ancient Egyptian history and mythology. Their inclusion gives the 2027 programme a strong technical and progressive edge within its Death Metal component.

Mgła: The Polish Black Metal band returns to Party.San after previous appearances in 2016 and 2019. Their music is characterized by hypnotic melodies and a consistently dark atmosphere, making their 2027 appearance one of the major Black Metal performances on the bill.

Taake: The Norwegian Black Metal group returns to Schlotheim after previous Party.San appearances in 2011 and 2016. Their 2027 performance will mark their third appearance at the festival.

Primordial: Primordial will perform The Gathering Wilderness in full. The 2005 album will receive a dedicated album show, giving the Irish Pagan Metal band a particularly distinctive performance concept for 2027.

Blood Fire Death: This special project is presented as a tribute to Quorthon and the music of Bathory, bringing material connected with one of the key influences on Black and Pagan Metal.

Deserted Fear: The Thuringian Death Metal band will celebrate 15 years of My Empire with an exclusive festival performance. The group has appeared at Party.San several times previously and is closely associated with the festival.

Svarttjern: The Norwegian Black Metal band will perform its 2009 debut album Misanthropic Path Of Madness in its entirety, creating another dedicated album performance on the 2027 programme.

Oxygen Destroyer: The Seattle band will make its first European appearance at Party.San. Their Death/Thrash approach incorporates a strong Kaiju and Japanese monster-film concept, providing a distinctive theme within the lineup.

Stages & performance areas

Party.San uses two principal performance stages.

Main Stage: The main stage hosts the major festival performances and operates from Thursday through Saturday. It is the central concert area for the principal billing and headline-level appearances.

Tent Stage: The tent stage also operates throughout the three main festival days. It provides an alternative performance environment and becomes the location for the daily after-show party with DJs from associated radio stations once the main festival programme has finished.

Festival Infield: The area surrounding the stages contains the main visitor facilities, food and drink outlets and access routes between the concert spaces.

Party Tent: The party tent opens from Wednesday evening for the welcome party and selected food and drink stands. During Thursday through Saturday it becomes the after-show venue after the infield closes.

Camping area: Camping is located directly beside the festival grounds, making it possible for visitors to remain close to the concert area throughout the weekend.

Stage-by-stage schedule

The detailed 2027 running order has not yet been published. Party.San has confirmed the artists and the two-stage format, but individual performance days and exact stage assignments will be announced later.

Set times

Exact 2027 set times have not yet been announced. Party.San traditionally publishes its running order closer to the festival, allowing visitors to see the individual performance times and stage assignments.

The two stages operate during the Thursday-to-Saturday festival period, while the tent stage continues into the night with after-show parties.

Visitors planning to see specific bands should therefore wait for the official running order before arranging their day. This is particularly important for the 2027 album shows and special performances because the final schedule will determine when these unique sets take place.

Ticket types

Party.San encourages visitors to purchase tickets in advance because festival capacity can be reached. The official FAQ states that the availability of weekend or day tickets at the box office cannot be guaranteed and that a final decision on box-office availability is only expected closer to the festival.

First Strike ticket: The limited First Strike allocation for 2027 contains 1,666 tickets. The organizer announced that this first tier was already close to selling out shortly after advance sales began. The First Strike ticket was listed at approximately $199 including a festival shirt, based on the announced price of $169.99.

Standard festival ticket: After the First Strike allocation sells out, the festival moves to the next pricing tier. The exact price of the subsequent tier should be checked through the official ticket shop because the organizer has not stated a final amount in the current official FAQ.

Day tickets: Day-ticket availability is not guaranteed at the box office. Visitors who want to attend for only one day should therefore check the official ticket shop before travelling.

WoMo ticket: A limited caravan or motorhome option is available for 2027, with only 50 places. The designated area includes access to electricity, water and wastewater disposal facilities.

Shower and toilet flat-rate ticket: A separate flat-rate ticket for the designated flush toilets and showers is available at service points. Mobile and water toilets remain available free of charge.

VIP & premium options

Party.San does not currently advertise a conventional VIP package with separate luxury viewing areas, VIP lounges or premium hospitality facilities.

The festival’s additional ticket options are primarily designed around practical visitor needs rather than premium entertainment. The limited WoMo ticket provides a designated area for caravans and motorhomes, while the shower and toilet flat-rate ticket provides access to the enhanced sanitary facilities.

The WoMo area includes a 230V connection, a water withdrawal point and a central wastewater disposal facility. Only caravans and motorhomes may use this area, and the space is subject to the festival’s Green Camping rules.

Event rules

Valid admission: Entry to the festival grounds, camping and parking areas requires a valid ticket. Festival admission is converted into a visitor wristband at the designated exchange points.

No campfires: Building campfires is prohibited on both the camping area and the festival infield.

No digging: Visitors may not dig holes on the festival grounds or camping areas.

No private generators: Private power generators are prohibited on the festival site.

Glass: Glass containers are prohibited throughout the festival grounds.

Pets: Bringing pets, particularly dogs, is prohibited.

Driving speed: Vehicles on the festival grounds must not exceed 20 km/h.

Airfield restrictions: Visitors must remain within the designated festival and camping areas and may not enter restricted parts of the airfield.

Recording: By entering the festival grounds, visitors agree that image and sound recordings may be made and subsequently published by the organizer.

How to get there

Party.San Metal Open Air is held at Am Flugplatz 1, 99996 Schlotheim/Obermehler, Germany.

By car: The airfield can be reached by road from Schlotheim and the surrounding Thuringian region. The festival provides dedicated parking areas, and visitors should follow signs and instructions from parking staff on arrival.

By train: Mühlhausen is the key railway connection for the official festival shuttle. The Party.San shuttle connects Mühlhausen train station with the festival grounds.

By coach: The official travel information also provides information for long-distance coach travel, including a dedicated coach option from France and Belgium through an external travel provider.

By air: The festival’s official arrival page lists approximate distances of 60 km from Erfurt Airport, 120 km from Altenburg and Kassel, 180 km from Leipzig, 250 km from Frankfurt and 300 km from Berlin.

Public transport & parking

The Party.San shuttle bus is the most useful public-transport option for visitors arriving by train. It operates between Mühlhausen railway station and the festival grounds, with departures scheduled around the festival period.

The currently published shuttle price is approximately $23 for a return journey, based on the listed $20-equivalent fare of €20. The same fare applies to the night-ticket return shuttle arrangement.

Parking is available for cars, caravans and coaches. The official 2027 FAQ lists:

• Car parking: approximately $18
• Caravan, coach or vehicle with trailer: approximately $35

These amounts are converted from the organizer’s published 2027 parking fees using an approximate EUR-to-USD conversion. Parking payment is made on site and visitors are advised to have cash available.

The limited WoMo ticket exempts the holder from purchasing a separate parking sticker for the motorhome area.

Accommodation areas

The simplest accommodation option is the official festival campsite directly beside the festival area. The campsite opens on Wednesday, 4 August 2027, and is primarily made up of flat, drained or paved meadow areas.

Festival camping: Ideal for visitors who want to remain within walking distance of the stages and avoid daily transport.

Car camping: Visitors arriving by car can use the designated parking arrangements and camping areas according to the festival’s current regulations.

Motorhome and caravan area: The limited WoMo area is reserved for caravans and motorhomes. It provides electricity, water access and a central wastewater disposal point. Only 50 WoMo tickets are available.

Hotels and guesthouses: Visitors who prefer conventional accommodation can use hotels and guesthouses around Schlotheim, Mühlhausen and nearby towns. The official festival website also maintains a hotel information section for visitors who do not want to sleep in a tent or vehicle.

Food & drink

Food and drinks will be available from Wednesday evening through Sunday morning. The festival states that it selects catering partners carefully and asks suppliers to provide food and drinks at fair prices.

Breakfast tent: A breakfast facility operates near the festival entrance and is available from Wednesday evening during the opening period.

Beer garden: A beer garden is located between the festival entrance and backstage entrance and opens from Wednesday evening.

Party tent: The party tent provides selected food and drink stands during the welcome party and becomes the late-night after-show area.

Water: Visitors may bring water onto the infield in unopened Tetra-Paks or PET bottles with a maximum capacity of one litre, with one bottle allowed per person. Personal drinks are generally permitted on the campsite.

Glass containers are prohibited across the entire festival site.

Accessibility

Party.San states that it continues to improve facilities for visitors with disabilities and wheelchair users. A designated area in front of the stage allows wheelchair users and people with walking disabilities to position themselves safely during performances.

The relatively flat campsite is another practical feature for visitors who require easier movement around the accommodation area, although festival conditions can still vary depending on weather.

Visitors with specific accessibility requirements should contact the festival before travelling so that the latest arrangements can be confirmed. This is particularly useful for questions involving parking, stage viewing areas, sanitary facilities and transport between the campsite and festival grounds.

Best days to attend

Thursday: Thursday is the opening festival day and is ideal for visitors who want to experience the start of the 2027 programme. Arriving Wednesday is useful for campers because the campsite opens before the concerts.

Friday: Friday provides a full festival day with both stages operating and the evening continuing into the after-show programme. It is a practical choice for visitors who want a broad selection of Black, Death and extreme-metal performances.

Saturday: Saturday is the final main festival day and provides the closing performances before the festival transitions toward departure. Visitors staying through Saturday can also experience the final after-show activities.

All three days: A full festival stay provides the widest opportunity to see the complete programme because the 2027 running order and stage assignments may create overlaps between the two stages.

Previous year’s highlights

Party.San celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2026, making the edition an important milestone in the festival’s history. The official festival described the anniversary weekend as another gathering centered on extreme music, community and a festival experience without unnecessary extras.

The 2026 billing included Amorphis, Testament, Hypocrisy, Dark Funeral, Alcest, Moonspell, Marduk, Wolves in the Throne Room, Misery Index, 200 Stab Wounds, Iotunn, Celeste, Afsky, Lamp of Murmuur and many other extreme-metal acts.

Several changes also occurred during the 2026 programme. Panzerfaust cancelled and was replaced by Afsky, while Devourment cancelled its European shows and Acranius took the available slot. Desaster also cancelled shortly before the festival and Lamp of Murmuur was announced as the replacement.

The festival closed its 2026 edition by announcing that advance sales for 2027 were already underway. The organizer reported that the limited 1,666 First Strike tickets were approaching a sellout, with the next pricing tier scheduled to follow.

The official Party.San website directs visitors to the Cudgel Mailorder ticket shop for festival tickets and merchandise. The festival recommends purchasing in advance because capacity can be reached and day or weekend tickets may not necessarily be available at the box office.
