Overview

The Sines World Music Festival, officially known as Festival Músicas do Mundo (FMM Sines), returns to Portugal’s Alentejo coast from 16–24 July 2027. The festival is organised by the Municipality of Sines and will once again spread its programme between the coastal town of Sines and the nearby village of Porto Covo.

FMM is known for presenting music from different parts of the world while connecting traditional musical roots with contemporary and experimental sounds. Rather than focusing on one commercial genre, its programme has historically brought together artists representing diverse musical cultures and approaches.

The festival has been organised by Sines City Council since 1999 and has become a major cultural event for the municipality. Sines itself describes FMM as one of Europe’s important world music festivals, with concerts taking place against the backdrop of the town’s historic castle as well as at other venues.

What Makes FMM Sines Special

One of the defining features of FMM is its relationship with the landscape and historic character of the Alentejo coast. The festival does not rely on a single large festival field; instead, concerts and cultural activities are distributed across Sines and Porto Covo.

The programme is also deliberately international. FMM’s stated identity is based on bringing together musical traditions from different continents with contemporary forms of creation, making the festival relevant to audiences interested in both traditional world music and modern cross-cultural collaborations.

Another distinctive element is the combination of ticketed evening concerts with free performances in public spaces. Previous editions have used Porto Covo, the castle, streets and cultural venues to create different atmospheres throughout the festival.

Lineup & Featured Artists

The 2027 artist lineup has not yet been announced. It is therefore too early to provide a confirmed list of performers for the 27th edition.

Previous editions demonstrate the breadth of music normally associated with FMM. The festival has presented musicians from Africa, Latin America, Europe, Asia and other regions, alongside Portuguese artists and projects that combine different musical traditions.

The emphasis is not simply on established international names. FMM’s programming has historically included emerging artists, traditional musicians, contemporary projects and collaborations that introduce audiences to musical cultures they may not otherwise encounter.

Festival Experience

FMM is designed as an experience that extends beyond individual concerts. During the festival, visitors can move between Sines and Porto Covo, discover different performance spaces and combine music with the coastal environment and local food.

The atmosphere changes considerably according to the venue. A major evening concert at the castle has a very different character from an outdoor performance in Porto Covo or a smaller concert at a cultural venue in Sines.

Previous official festival guides have also included free concerts in Porto Covo, Pátio das Artes, Largo Poeta Bocage and Avenida Vasco da Gama, while selected performances at the castle and Centro de Artes de Sines have used separate admission arrangements.

Date & Schedule

FMM Sines 2027 will take place from Friday 16 July through Saturday 24 July 2027. The nine-day period covers both Sines and Porto Covo.

The change from the festival’s usual late-July timing is deliberate. Sines is scheduled to host the Tall Ships 2027 event from 29 July to 1 August, so the municipality has brought FMM forward to avoid the two major events overlapping.

Location & Festival Venues

The festival takes place primarily in Sines and Porto Covo, two destinations on Portugal’s Alentejo coast.

Sines Castle is one of the festival’s best-known settings. Its historic walls provide the backdrop for major concerts and give the evening programme a distinctive atmosphere. The castle is located in the historic centre of Sines overlooking the coast.

Another important cultural venue is Centro de Artes de Sines, which has hosted festival concerts and other cultural activities. Previous editions have also used public squares, streets and outdoor spaces throughout Sines and Porto Covo.

Festival History

FMM Sines began in 1999, organised by the Municipality of Sines. Over more than two decades, it has developed from a local cultural event into an internationally recognised festival dedicated to music from around the world.

Its long-term identity has remained connected to the idea of musical diversity. Instead of treating world music as a single genre, FMM presents music rooted in different cultural traditions alongside contemporary and innovative forms of musical expression.

The festival’s use of Sines and Porto Covo has also become part of its identity. Visitors experience concerts within historic and coastal environments rather than at a conventional out-of-town festival site.

Getting to FMM Sines

Sines is approximately 160 kilometres south of Lisbon by road. Lisbon Airport is the most practical major international gateway for many international visitors, while travelling by rental car provides considerable flexibility when attending concerts in both Sines and Porto Covo.

Visitors arriving by public transport can travel toward Sines through regional connections from Lisbon and other Portuguese cities. Because the festival programme is distributed between different locations, it is useful to check the 2027 transport arrangements once the official timetable is released.

Porto Covo is only a short journey from Sines by road, making it possible to combine performances in both locations during the same festival trip.

Where to Stay Nearby

Staying in Sines is convenient for visitors who want access to the largest range of festival venues. The town offers hotels, guesthouses, apartments and other accommodation options within reach of the historic centre.

Porto Covo is another attractive choice, particularly for visitors who want to combine FMM with a coastal holiday. However, its smaller size means accommodation availability can become limited during the summer festival period.

The 2027 dates are also relatively close to Tall Ships 2027, which will bring additional visitors to Sines from 29 July to 1 August. Local officials have already noted that the two major events will put additional pressure on accommodation and restaurants in the area.

Things to Do Before or After the Festival

Sines has strong maritime and historical connections and is worth exploring beyond the concert programme. The castle and historic centre provide an easy starting point, while the coastline offers beaches and viewpoints overlooking the Atlantic.

Porto Covo is particularly suitable for visitors who want to add beaches and coastal walks to their festival itinerary. The village is known for its traditional whitewashed architecture and access to the surrounding coastline.

Visitors staying longer can also explore the wider Alentejo coast, including beaches and natural landscapes around Vila Nova de Milfontes and the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast region.

Restaurants & Local Food

The Sines and Porto Covo area is strongly associated with seafood and Atlantic coastal cuisine. Fresh fish, shellfish and other seafood dishes are common choices, while traditional Portuguese restaurants also offer meat dishes, soups and regional specialities.

During FMM, food is part of the wider festival experience rather than simply something to eat between concerts. Visitors can combine evening performances with local restaurants and cafés around the historic centre.

Because the festival takes place during the busy summer season, visitors planning group meals should consider making restaurant reservations in advance, particularly for evenings when major concerts are scheduled.

Cultural Programme & Free Activities

FMM’s cultural programme extends beyond the main ticketed concerts. Previous editions have included free performances in public spaces, cultural activities and concerts in Porto Covo and other parts of Sines.

This creates several ways to experience the festival. Visitors can purchase tickets for selected major concerts while also attending free performances elsewhere in the programme.

The combination is particularly useful for travellers who want to explore the festival without committing to a full multi-day ticket package.

Ticket Information & Access

2027 ticket prices and the complete ticket structure have not yet been announced.

Previous editions have used different admission arrangements depending on the venue. The official 2025 guide, for example, listed individual tickets and multi-day passes for night concerts at Sines Castle, while concerts in Porto Covo and several other public spaces were free. Concerts at the Centro de Artes de Sines auditorium had separate admission.

The 2027 ticketing system may differ, so visitors should wait for the official programme before assuming that previous prices, passes or admission rules will apply.

Tips Before You Go

FMM works particularly well as part of a longer Alentejo coast trip. Instead of staying only for one headline concert, visitors can use the festival period to explore different stages, discover less familiar artists and spend time in both Sines and Porto Covo.

July can be hot on the Portuguese coast, so light clothing, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes are useful during the day. Evening performances can continue late, and a light layer can be helpful near the Atlantic after sunset.

If you intend to attend concerts in both Sines and Porto Covo, check the final transport information carefully. The two locations are close, but the best way to move between them can depend on the daily schedule.
