What to expect in 2027

Zeltfestival Ruhr 2027 will transform the area around Kemnader See on the Bochum-Witten city boundary into a 17-day cultural festival from 20 August to 5 September 2027. The event combines live music, comedy, cultural performances, an international arts-and-crafts market, food and drink, family activities, a beach-style relaxation area and a programme of concerts in several large festival tents. The official festival describes the site as a 25,000-square-metre experience world in the heart of the Ruhr region.

The announced 2027 programme includes Sarah Connor, Torsten Sträter, Kai Magnus Sting, Stefanie Heinzmann, MEUTE, Bosse, Heiner Lauterbach, Nico Santos, Dick Brave, Clueso, SAGA, Frida Gold, Danger Dan, Schiller and Michael Mittermeier. The programme covers pop, rock, electronic music, singer-songwriter, comedy, spoken-word entertainment and other cultural formats rather than focusing on a single musical genre.

Beyond the ticketed concerts, the outdoor festival area is designed as an attraction in its own right. Visitors can walk through the Markt der Möglichkeiten, visit food and drink stalls, relax at the Beach, listen to performances on the Piazza stage and enjoy the decorated and illuminated festival environment. Concert-ticket holders receive free access to the outdoor area on the day of their event.

The festival also has a family component. On Saturdays and Sundays, the REWE Kinderareal offers activities including a bouncy castle, face painting and creative workshops, while children’s events take place in the festival tents.

Event dates

Zeltfestival Ruhr 2027 takes place from 20 August to 5 September 2027 at Kemnader See on the Bochum-Witten city boundary. The festival lasts 17 days and presents a changing programme throughout the period.

The outdoor area generally opens from 4:00 p.m. on weekdays and from 12:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The Markt der Möglichkeiten normally closes one hour earlier than the main outdoor area, while individual concerts have their own admission and start times.

The address belongs to the nearby Freizeitbad Heveney and is the navigation point recommended by the organizers. The festival itself is situated beside the lake and within the wider Kemnader Stausee recreation area.

The festival grounds cover approximately 25,000 square metres and are fenced and equipped with wooden walkways. The surrounding Kemnader See area is a major recreation destination with activities such as cycling, skating, sailing and walking.

Headliners & featured artists

Sarah Connor: Sarah Connor opens the 2027 festival programme on 20 August with her “Wilde Nächte 2” live show. The production is built around her band, dancers, large-scale staging and material from her recent musical work. The show is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m., with admission from 7:00 p.m.

Bosse: Bosse returns to Zeltfestival Ruhr on 27 August with the “Stabile Poesie Sommer 2027” tour. His performance combines Indie Rock, Alternative and Pop, with a live approach built around interaction between the band and audience.

Nico Santos: Nico Santos appears on 30 August with his “POV: SUMMER TOUR 2027”. The concert combines his established hits with newer material and songs connected with his SANTOS project. The show also marks ten years of “Rooftop”, the song associated with the beginning of his career.

Clueso: Clueso performs on 1 September with a live programme that combines Pop, Hip-Hop and Singer-Songwriter influences. The festival describes the performance as a band-based show with fresh arrangements and a summer concert atmosphere.

Schiller: Schiller brings “Sommernacht 2027” to the festival on 4 September. The performance focuses on electronic soundscapes, beats, atmospheric sequences and large-scale live visuals, creating a more immersive electronic concert experience.

Dick Brave: The Dick Brave show on 31 August is built around Fifties-inspired Rock ‘n’ Roll, Powerchords and a deliberately retro stage concept. The performance is designed as an energetic dance-oriented show rather than a conventional seated concert.

Torsten Sträter: Torsten Sträter presents “Die Zyklopen von Saint-Tropez” on 22 August, with an additional show on 23 August. His programme combines stand-up comedy, observations about travelling and his distinctive storytelling style.

Stages & performance areas

Zeltfestival Ruhr uses several spaces for different types of entertainment.

Event tents: The principal ticketed concerts and comedy shows take place in the festival’s event tents. The 2027 programme includes music, comedy and other stage productions spread throughout the 17-day period.

Piazza stage: The Piazza stage is part of the outdoor festival area and presents atmospheric performances by newcomers, local Ruhr-area artists and emerging acts. It gives visitors an opportunity to hear live music without purchasing a ticket for one of the major tent shows.

Markt der Möglichkeiten: The international arts-and-crafts market provides another major attraction, with stalls and products that encourage visitors to browse between performances.

Beach: The Beach area provides a relaxed space beside the main festival activity where visitors can sit, enjoy a drink and spend time near the lake.

REWE Kinderareal: On Saturdays and Sundays, the children’s area operates from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with family activities and creative entertainment.

Because Zeltfestival Ruhr is a 17-day cultural event rather than a conventional three-day festival, its programme is organized primarily by date and venue instead of a single continuous stage schedule.

The outdoor Piazza programme, children’s programme and other cultural activities run alongside the ticketed event schedule and may vary by day.

Set times

Individual start times vary according to the performance. Many of the currently announced 2027 evening shows have doors at 7:00 p.m. and concerts beginning at 8:00 p.m., while weekend shows can have earlier starts.

The outdoor area opens earlier than the individual concert venues, allowing visitors to explore the market, restaurants and other attractions before their scheduled show.

Ticket types

Zeltfestival Ruhr uses separate admission systems for the outdoor festival area and the ticketed events in the tents.

Outdoor Walk-In ticket: The current published outdoor admission is approximately $6 in advance and $8 at the on-site day box office, based on the festival’s listed prices and an approximate exchange rate. The Walk-In ticket provides access to the outdoor festival area for the selected day.

ZfR-Card: The current published ZfR-Card price is approximately $22 and provides outdoor-area admission throughout all 17 festival days. It also includes use of the special shuttle bus between Bochum Hauptbahnhof and the festival. Entry into the event tents is not included.

Concert tickets: Each event in the tents requires its own concert ticket unless another admission arrangement is specified. A valid concert ticket also includes access to the outdoor festival area on the same day.

These are converted from the currently displayed 2027 ticket amounts and may change with fees, ticket availability or later sales phases.

VIP & premium options

Zeltfestival Ruhr does not currently present a conventional VIP ticket programme with a dedicated premium concert entrance, VIP pit or separate headline-stage viewing platform.

The festival site does, however, include designated hospitality and partner areas within the outdoor grounds. The main visitor experience remains centered on the public festival area, the event tents, gastronomy, Piazza and market.

The ZfR-Card can be considered the principal multi-day upgrade for visitors who plan to return repeatedly during the 17-day festival. It provides outdoor-area access every festival day and includes the special festival shuttle service, although it does not provide entry to the ticketed tent shows.

Event rules

Bag restrictions: Only bags up to approximately DIN A4 size are permitted into the festival. Larger bags and backpacks can be stored in the Mobile Locker facilities.

Food and drinks: Visitors are not permitted to bring their own food and drinks onto the festival grounds. The site provides numerous gastronomy options throughout the event.

Photography and filming: Photography and filming during concerts and shows are generally prohibited.

Smoking: Smoking is not permitted inside the festival tents.

Leaving the site: Concert tickets lose their validity when visitors leave the festival grounds, so visitors should plan their arrival and time on site carefully.

Dogs: Dogs are not recommended because much of the festival area is covered with wooden flooring, and dogs are not permitted inside concerts. If brought onto the festival grounds, dogs must remain on a leash.

Camping: Camping directly on the festival grounds and throughout the surrounding protected nature area is prohibited.

How to get there

The festival is located directly beside Kemnader See on the boundary between Bochum and Witten. For navigation systems, the official recommendation is Querenburger Straße 35, 58455 Witten, the address of the nearby Freizeitbad Heveney.

By car: Drivers approaching by motorway are advised to use the A43 exit “BO-Universität” and follow the festival signs. The organizers specifically recommend this route as the faster approach to the festival area.

From Bochum: Bochum is the most convenient major city connection, with the special festival bus running from Bochum Hauptbahnhof to the ZfR.

From Witten: Witten is directly adjacent to the festival grounds, making the city a useful base for visitors staying in local accommodation.

By bicycle: Bicycle parking is available close to the festival grounds. Visitors should use the designated bicycle facilities and avoid attaching bicycles to emergency exits.

Public transport & parking

Public transport is strongly recommended by the organizers. The festival area can be reached using several regular bus services to the Freizeitbad Heveney stop.

A dedicated ZfR special bus line operates between Bochum Hauptbahnhof, Hochschule Bochum, Heven Dorf and the festival. The journey from Bochum Hauptbahnhof takes approximately 23 minutes. On weekdays the special service operates at around 15-minute intervals during festival opening hours; weekend service begins at a lower frequency before increasing later in the day.

Visitors with a concert ticket can use the relevant public transport services under the festival’s Kombiticket arrangement. Holders of the ZfR-Card can also use the special festival shuttle without an additional fare.

Parking capacity around Kemnader See is limited. The festival itself does not operate all surrounding car parks, and several temporary parking areas are independently managed. Visitors arriving by car should follow the official signs and local parking instructions.

Accommodation areas

There is no official camping area at Zeltfestival Ruhr. Camping on the festival grounds and in the surrounding nature-protection area is prohibited. Visitors who want to stay overnight should therefore book a hotel, guesthouse or other accommodation in Bochum, Witten or nearby Ruhr-area communities.

The festival itself recommends several accommodation partners for visitors, including:

These options provide different styles of accommodation while keeping visitors within reasonable travelling distance of Kemnader See.

Staying in Bochum is particularly practical for visitors who intend to attend multiple concerts because the dedicated ZfR shuttle operates from Bochum Hauptbahnhof.

Food & drink

Food and drink are central parts of the outdoor festival experience. The festival currently states that around 15 gastronomy operators provide a broad selection of food and refreshments. The outdoor area operates from 4:00 p.m. to midnight on weekdays and from noon to midnight on weekends.

The organizers describe the gastronomy offering as one of the defining attractions of the festival and invite visitors to spend time at the outdoor area even when they are not attending a concert.

Visitors should remember that bringing personal food and drinks onto the festival grounds is not permitted. A Sparkasse ATM is available beside the main entrance, while Mobile Lockers can be used to store belongings and charge electronic devices.

Accessibility

Zeltfestival Ruhr is accessible to wheelchair users, although visitors should be aware that the event tents are positioned on grass that is covered with wooden flooring. An accessible toilet is available on site.

Visitors with a documented accompanying person can arrange admission so that the accompanying person is admitted free, provided the required registration is completed in advance. For unseated events, registered wheelchair users can use the designated viewing platform. Visitors using rollators are directed to the grandstand rather than the front standing area for safety reasons.

The festival grounds also include secured walking routes, toilets and other infrastructure intended to make the outdoor area easier to navigate. Because the event takes place outdoors beside the lake, visitors with specific mobility needs should still plan their route and accommodation in advance.

Best days to attend

Opening weekend: The first weekend, beginning with Sarah Connor and followed by the comedy and cultural programme, is suitable for visitors who want to experience the start of the 17-day festival.

Mid-festival: The period from 25–31 August includes Stefanie Heinzmann, MEUTE, Bosse, Heiner Lauterbach, Nico Santos and Dick Brave. It provides a broad combination of pop, electronic music, rock, comedy and live entertainment.

Final weekend: The final weekend includes Danger Dan, Schiller and Michael Mittermeier. It combines contemporary music, electronic performance and comedy and provides several different reasons to visit the festival during its closing days.

Multiple visits: Visitors who live nearby or are staying in the Ruhr region can use the ZfR-Card to return throughout the 17-day festival and experience the changing outdoor programme without purchasing a separate outdoor ticket each day.

Previous year’s highlights

The 2026 edition continued the festival’s established format of combining major concerts with an outdoor cultural environment, gastronomy, market stalls and family activities.

The 2026 programme included international artists such as James Arthur, Tom Odell, Zaz and Amy Macdonald alongside major German acts including Wincent Weiss, Giovanni Zarrella, Santiano, Frida Gold, Grossstadtgeflüster, Deine Cousine and Querbeat. OMD and Uriah Heep added established international rock and pop names, while The Dead South brought their distinctive folk sound to the festival.

The 2026 edition also included a strong comedy and spoken-entertainment component alongside the music programme. The festival continued to use its outdoor area as a destination in itself, with gastronomy, the international market, the Piazza and the Beach complementing the ticketed shows.

The 2027 programme continues this multi-genre approach, moving between mainstream pop, rock, electronic music, comedy and other cultural formats rather than concentrating on a single audience or musical style.

Official tickets

Tickets for individual 2027 concerts and shows are available through the official Zeltfestival Ruhr programme and ticketing system. Each event has its own ticket category, seating or standing arrangement and admission time. The official programme pages provide the current ticket information for each performance.

The outdoor festival area can also be visited without attending a ticketed concert. The current published model charges approximately $6 for advance Walk-In admission or approximately $8 at the on-site cashless day box office. Children under the specified age limit receive free access.

The ZfR-Card costs approximately $22 and provides outdoor-area admission throughout all 17 festival days. It also includes the dedicated festival bus service between Bochum Hauptbahnhof and the event. The card does not include admission to concerts in the event tents.
