Overview

The Seville Fair, Feria de Abril, is one of the defining celebrations of Seville and one of the best-known traditional festivals in Andalusia. In 2027, the fair will take place from 13 to 18 April, transforming the Real de la Feria in the Los Remedios district into a temporary city of decorated streets, colourful lights, traditional casetas, flamenco dresses, horses, music, dancing and Andalusian food.

Unlike a conventional music festival, Feria de Abril is built around the social and cultural life of Seville. The heart of the celebration is the caseta, where people gather to eat, drink, sing and dance sevillanas. During the daytime, the Real is filled with horse riders and decorated carriages, while evenings bring the illuminated fairground and increasingly lively gatherings inside and around the casetas.

The fair officially begins with the famous Alumbrao, when the lights of the entrance gate and the fairground are switched on at midnight. The opening is traditionally preceded by the Cena del Pescaíto, a dinner centred on fried fish and other Andalusian food. The week ends with a large fireworks display over the Guadalquivir.

The Alumbrao and Opening Night

The Alumbrao is the moment that officially brings the Feria de Abril to life. At midnight at the beginning of the fair, thousands of lights illuminate the main entrance, known as the Portada, followed by the lighting of the streets throughout the Real.

For visitors, opening night is one of the most atmospheric moments of the entire celebration. The traditional pescaíto dinner takes place beforehand in many casetas, with fried fish, seafood, cured meats, cheeses and drinks such as manzanilla and fino. When the clock reaches midnight, the lights are switched on and the fair officially begins.

Visitors should note that the Monday evening is primarily associated with the traditional pre-opening dinner and Alumbrao. The official six-day fair runs from Tuesday 13 April through Sunday 18 April.

The Real de la Feria

The fair takes place at the Real de la Feria in Los Remedios. It is designed almost like a temporary city, with streets named after figures associated with Seville and rows of elaborately decorated casetas.

The Real has been the permanent home of the Seville Fair since 1973. Today it contains more than a thousand casetas and forms the main stage for the city’s spring celebration.

The entrance is dominated by the annual Portada, which receives a different design each year. For 2027, the Portada will pay tribute to the Moroccan Pavilion from the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition and the Pino Montano estate associated with the Generation of ’27, marking the centenary of the literary generation in 2027. The design was created by Hugo Montalbán Ramos.

Casetas: The Heart of the Fair

The casetas are the social heart of Feria de Abril. These decorated tents are where much of the eating, drinking, singing and dancing takes place throughout the week.

Many casetas are private and belong to families, groups of friends, companies, associations or other organisations. Access to these is normally by invitation, which is an important point for international visitors to understand before arriving. The fair also has public casetas with free access, allowing visitors without local connections to experience the traditional atmosphere.

One of the most useful options for visitors is the Caseta de Sevilla, operated by the city’s tourism authority at 225–229 Pascual Márquez. It has indoor and terrace areas and features sevillanas and rumba music during designated periods. Terrace tables require advance reservation.

The municipality publishes information about public casetas and their locations, making it easier for visitors to plan their time inside the Real. The exact 2027 public-caseta information should be checked once the city’s 2027 listings are released.

Sevillanas, Flamenco Dresses and Fair Traditions

Music and dancing are central to the Feria de Abril experience. Sevillanas, a traditional Andalusian form of music and dance, can be heard throughout the casetas, with people dancing in pairs and groups.

The visual character of the fair is equally distinctive. Women wearing trajes de flamenca, or flamenco dresses, are a familiar sight throughout the Real, while traditional riding clothing is worn by horsemen and women participating in the daytime equestrian activities. The flamenco dress became firmly established in Seville following the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition.

Visitors do not have to wear traditional clothing. Elegant, comfortable clothing and suitable walking shoes are perfectly practical choices, particularly because the ground of the fairground is covered with albero, the characteristic golden-coloured sand used throughout the Real.

Paseo de Caballos and Horse-Drawn Carriages

One of the most distinctive daytime traditions is the Paseo de Caballos y Enganches, when riders, horses and elaborately decorated horse-drawn carriages move through the streets of the Real.

The tradition is closely connected with Andalusian equestrian culture. The carriages themselves can be highly elaborate, while riders traditionally wear regional riding clothing. The municipality regulates which carriages may enter the Real during the official horse-and-carriage period; historically, around 1,400 municipally registered carriages have been permitted.

For visitors, the Paseo de Caballos is one of the best reasons to explore the fair during daylight rather than concentrating only on the evening atmosphere.

Calle del Infierno

Next to the main caseta area is Calle del Infierno, the traditional amusement area of the Feria.

It contains rides, children’s attractions, entertainment, food stalls, games and other fairground activities. The area is particularly popular with families but offers attractions for adults as well. The municipal fairground information describes it as covering a substantial area alongside the Real and containing hundreds of activities and installations.

For families visiting Seville, spending some time around Calle del Infierno provides a very different experience from the traditional caseta streets.

What to Eat and Drink at the Fair

Food is an essential part of Feria de Abril. The traditional opening-night pescaíto is one of the best-known culinary customs, while casetas serve a mixture of Andalusian dishes, tapas and other fair foods throughout the week.

Common drinks associated with the fair include manzanilla, fino, beer and soft drinks. Manzanilla in particular has a strong connection with the Feria de Abril.

Visitors should remember that individual casetas have their own menus, atmosphere and rules. Public casetas can be particularly useful for travellers who want to experience traditional fair food without needing an invitation to a private caseta.

A Typical Day at Feria de Abril

The experience changes considerably between daytime and nighttime.

During the afternoon, visitors can explore the Real, watch the horse parade, visit public casetas, eat lunch and experience the fairground attractions. This is also a good time for photography because the traditional dresses, horses, carriages and decorated casetas are particularly visible.

As evening approaches, the illuminated streets become increasingly atmospheric. Music and dancing become more prominent, and visitors often move between different public areas and casetas.

The fair continues late into the night. The combination of lights, sevillanas, food, conversation and dancing is one of the defining characteristics of Feria de Abril.

Date & Daily Rhythm

The official 2027 Feria de Abril runs from Tuesday 13 April through Sunday 18 April. The traditional Alumbrao takes place at midnight before the first official day.

Rather than following a concert-style timetable, the fair has a repeating daily rhythm. Daytime is particularly associated with horses, carriages, lunches and family visits, while evenings gradually transition into a much livelier social atmosphere.

The final Sunday provides the closing celebration, ending with the traditional fireworks display.

Location & How to Get Around

The Real de la Feria is in Los Remedios, on the western side of central Seville near the Guadalquivir.

Because the fair attracts very large crowds, public transportation is generally more practical than attempting to drive directly to the fairground. Seville provides special Feria transport arrangements, including buses and taxi services, and the city’s official information system provides navigation and fairground information.

The municipality has also been improving pedestrian connections around the Real. A pedestrian extension connecting Calle Pepe Luis Vázquez with Avenida Juan Pablo II is planned for the 2027 fair, providing another access route and improving connections with taxis and buses.

Where to Stay in Seville

For visitors attending Feria de Abril, staying in or around Los Remedios can make access to the Real particularly convenient. Triana is another useful area because of its proximity to the fairground and its own strong connection with Seville’s traditional culture.

Central Seville can also work well, especially for visitors who want to combine the fair with sightseeing around the historic centre. Hotels near the city centre allow easy access to attractions such as the Cathedral, Alcázar and Santa Cruz while still providing transport connections towards the Feria.

One nearby option is Hotel Monte Carmelo in Los Remedios. Another is Líbere Seville Triana in Triana.

Accommodation can become particularly competitive during Feria de Abril, so visitors planning a 2027 trip should arrange their stay well in advance.

Things to Do Before or After the Fair

Feria de Abril provides a reason to spend several days in Seville rather than visiting only for the fair itself.

Before heading to the Real, visitors can explore the Seville Cathedral, Giralda, Real Alcázar, Plaza de España and Parque de María Luisa. The historic centre provides a very different atmosphere from the temporary city created around the Feria.

Triana is also worth exploring for its ceramics, traditional streets and connection with flamenco culture. The neighbourhood lies across the Guadalquivir from the historic centre and is particularly convenient for visitors staying close to the fair.

For visitors with additional time, the wider province of Seville offers historic towns and Andalusian countryside that can be incorporated into a longer trip.

Restaurants & Dining Beyond the Fair

Although many visitors will eat inside the Feria, exploring Seville’s restaurants before or after the event gives you a chance to experience the city’s wider culinary scene.

In the historic centre, Espacio Eslava is a well-known tapas restaurant on Calle Eslava. In the Feria district and surrounding areas, visitors can also find numerous tapas bars and traditional Andalusian restaurants.

For a casual meal before heading towards the fair, Bar Condendê is located in the Feria area. Opening hours and availability should always be checked directly, particularly during the busy Feria period.

Tickets and Admission

Unlike a conventional ticketed music festival, the Feria de Abril is primarily a public city celebration, and entering the general fairground does not require a standard festival admission ticket. The important distinction is access to the casetas. Many are private and require an invitation from a member or host, while public casetas are available for visitors without private connections.

Food, drinks, rides and other activities inside the fairground are paid separately. Prices vary depending on the individual caseta, attraction or service. If you want to eat at a specific public caseta, check whether advance table reservations are available. The Caseta de Sevilla, for example, requires advance reservation for its terrace tables.

Tips Before You Go

Plan around both daytime and nighttime. Visiting only after dark means missing the horse parade, carriages and much of the daytime social atmosphere. If you are travelling without local contacts, identify public casetas before arriving. This avoids assuming that every decorated tent is open to everyone.

Wear comfortable shoes. The Real is large and visitors can spend many hours walking over albero-covered streets. If you want to dress traditionally, flamenco clothing can be found through specialist shops and rental services in Seville, but traditional dress is not compulsory.

Book accommodation early because Feria de Abril is one of Seville’s busiest periods of the year. For visitors with accessibility requirements, the fair provides adapted routes, accessible facilities and designated parking and transport arrangements. The official tourism information should be checked closer to the 2027 edition for the latest accessibility map and services.

Seville Fair History

The modern Feria de Abril dates back to 1847, when the first edition was held at the Prado de San Sebastián as an agricultural and livestock fair.

The original event was significantly smaller than today’s celebration. The first modern fair had just 19 casetas, but the festive and social side of the event gradually became more important than its commercial livestock origins. Over time, the people of Seville transformed the fair into one of the city’s defining annual celebrations.

The fair moved to its current Real de la Feria location in 1973, where it developed into the large-scale celebration visitors see today.

Official Event Information

The Ayuntamiento de Sevilla and Visita Sevilla are the main sources for official information about Feria de Abril, including the 2027 dates, public casetas, access arrangements, fairground information, Portada announcements and municipal services.

For visitors, the official Feria information should be checked closer to April 2027 because public-caseta lists, transport arrangements, accessibility services and other operational information can change between editions.
